Sustainable Development Through Inclusive Trade

OUR PROGRAMS

Our core impact sectors are

We then focus on extending our work in each of these core impact sectors to the Humanitarian sector, supporting refugee settlements and other populations displaced by conflict and man-made or natural disasters. Digital technologies built into our products and every link of the global value chains within each impact sector enables us to more effectively deliver resources to local enterprises and to support them in tracking the impact of their work in local markets.

  • Our work in all these sectors contribute to many of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Energy Access

Affordable and Clean Energy is SDG 7. However, Energy Access is also essential to attain many of the other SDGs.  Our work primarily focuses on off-grid and weak grid communities.  By partnering with local entities, we ensure affordable and sustainable energy services with large-scale impact within these communities. Key outcomes include increased solar energy access, reduced reliance on fossil fuels, and decreased carbon emissions.

CLEAN COOKING

The Clean Cooking program promotes energy-efficient electric cooking appliances that reduce indoor air pollution, deforestation, and carbon emissions in underserved communities. TWB partners with local entities to extend education and training resources and access to impact assessment tools to track the key outcomes, which include reduced indoor air pollution, women’s empowerment by reducing the burden of collecting cooking fuels and saving time preparing meals, reduced deforestation and lowering CO2 emissions in alignment with carbon financing and other sources of sustainable finance.

SAFE WATER

The Safe Water program provides access to the most affordable supply of clean drinking water, particularly for rural, off-grid communities through solar-powered water kiosks featuring highly energy-efficient UV water purification and pre-paid smart water dispensers. TWB partners with local water entities to undertake benchmark assessments of safe water insecurity in local communities, extends training resources to properly maintain and service the water kiosks while also educating end consumers about the significant benefits of the safe water for their households. Key outcomes include greater income for the safe water kiosk operators, increased access to safe water for the community, a reduction in waterborne diseases and decreased deforestation by eliminating the need to boil water using firewood.

DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE

The Digital Infrastructure program aims to bridge the digital divide in underserved regions like Sub-Saharan Africa, not only for internet connectivity and back-up power solutions, but of increasing importance, for data collection, local data storage and low-cost, long distance data transmission whether to local servers or to the cloud. Key outcomes include the number of Edge computing devices installed, more reliable digital services, greater internet connectivity, lower data management costs and improved access to information and online services that improve livelihoods.

Humanitarian Services

The Humanitarian Services program extends our key energy access, clean cooking, safe water and digital infrastructure resources to humanitarian settings, including refugee camps. Displaced persons globally number more than 100 million and many spend as many as 20 years of more in semi-permanent, remote displacement settings while still seeking improved livelihoods and sustainable sources of income. TWB works in collaboration with local entities serving these vulnerable communities. Key outcomes include the number of clean energy and energy-efficient solutions deployed, the number of displaced persons served, increases in income, and healthier environments, the result of reduced pollution and CO2 emissions.
